Introduction to math inspiring LUMATIKKA-program

Abstract

LUMATIKKA is a continuing education program during 2018–2022, funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education and coordinated by LUMA Centre Finland, for teachers of early childhood education, preschool education, primary education, and secondary education working with mathematics. The learner-centered, hands-on, and concrete contents of the program have reached thousands of teachers all over Finland, supporting the change of teaching following the latest curricula. The objective of theme number is to illustrate what continuous learning is all about. The editorial responds to this by presenting the journey of the project. First, the starting point of the program is given. Next, the contents and pedagogy of the program is covered. Although the program will end in 2022, the LUMA Center Finland will continue to meet the existing need to develop mathematics teaching – the future after the program will be clarified in conclusion.

Author Biographies

Alisa Uusi-Kilponen, LUMA Centre Finland, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, Finland

Alisa’s wide range of interests in science and arts led her to classroom teacher studies at the University of Helsinki to have a master's degree in Arts. With her heart pounding in mathematics, she also qualified as a mathematics teacher for primary and secondary school. At the time of publishing this special theme issue, Alisa is working in the LUMA Center Finland network as a project planner in the LUMATIKKA in-service training program for mathematics teaching and learning, being also involved in other activities related to the development of mathematics teaching and teaching materials. In addition, she has worked as a designer developer of online pedagogy and learning analytics at the University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education HY+. Earlier she has worked both as a classroom teacher and as a math subject teacher. Alisa's special interests are inquiry-based learning and concrete and functional mathematics teaching.

Eveliina Hietakymi, LUMA Centre Finland, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, Finland

Eveliina has graduated from the University of Helsinki as a subject teacher in mathematics and geography. At the time of publishing this special issue, she is working as a project planner for the LUMATIKKA in-service training program in mathematics teaching and learning organized by LUMA Center Finland. Earlier she has worked at the university as a non-formal learning club coordinator and instructor in Summamutikka – one of the science education classes of the University of Helsinki. In the field of teaching, she has worked both as a resource teacher in the lower grades and as a subject teacher in the upper grades. Eveliina's interests are concrete-based and functional mathematics teaching.

Susanna Toikka, LUMA Centre Finland, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, Finland

Susanna is an early childhood education teacher and a class teacher, graduated from the University of Eastern Finland, whose purposeful desire to learn, research and develop has driven her towards postgraduate studies and dissertation research. In her dissertation, she describes the self-assessment skills of primary school students and its support. At the time of publishing this theme issue, Susanna is working as a project planner for the LUMATIKKA in-service training program in mathematics teaching and learning organized by LUMA Center Finland, and as an early stage researcher at the University of Eastern Finland. In addition to working as a teacher, she has previously worked at the University of Eastern Finland as a project researcher in the PARASKOULU project, which developed practices that affect learning and support the pedagogical well-being of the school community. Susanna's special area of ​​expertise is formative assessment.
