So called predatory publishers have been a standard topic of open access debates for as long as author fees (APCs) have been levied. Bo-Christer Björk, Sari Kanto-Karvonen and J. Tuomas Harviainen studied how predatory publications are cited. A study published in 2019 (pre-print version) shows that articles in predatory journals receive few or no citations: on the average, predatory articles drew 2,6 citations each and 60% of the articles attracted no citations. In a comparison with peer-reviewed journals the difference is clear: on the average, peer-reviewed articles get 18,1 citations and only 9% attract no citations.
