Open Access becomes mainstream in scholarly communication in the next few years

Abstract

"This is the largest, most comprehensive analysis ever to predict the future of Open Access", writes researcher Heather Piwowar about a study she co-wrote with Jason Priem and Richard Orr. The study, The Future of OA: A large-scale analysis projecting Open Access publication and readership (pre-print version), not only focus on publication trends but also on "viewership". The study is based on 70 million journal articles published between 1950 and 2019. According to the study, by 2025, the proportion of OA articles in all articles will increase from the current 31 percent to 44 percent. And by 2025, 70% of the articles read are OA articles (currently 52%). The authors suggest that these changes will shape the landscape of scholarly communication in the next few years.
